Dr. Barkha Singhal is an Assistant Professor at School of Biotechnology, Gautam Buddha University, Uttar Pradesh, India. She did M.Sc Biotechnology from Banasthali Vidyapith, Rajasthan, and completed her Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Uttrakhand. She has 14 years of teaching experience in different subjects of biotechnology and so far she has supervised more than 30 M.Tech students in their major dissertation projects and one Ph.D student currently she is supervising 02 Ph.D students.

 Current Research interest 

The current research interest includes the development of the fermentation process for the production of commercially important enzymes and their scale-up at the bioreactor level. Currently, the work is pursued in Lactobacillus fermentation for assessing their cell surface properties and molecular and biochemical profiling of surface layer proteins that subsequently lead to affect the technological properties of probiotics. The research interest also includes the process optimization of biosurfactants production from the probiotic organisms through culture-dependent and metagenomic approaches. 

Specific Research Objectives as per research strengths 

  • Identification and phylogenetic analysis of S-layer proteins of indigenous Lactobacillus sp.
  • Fermentation based modulation of Lactobacillus sp. to alter properties of S-layer proteins
  • Profiling of S-layer associated mucin- and fibronectin-binding proteins and evaluation of cell surface hydrophobicity of selected indigenous Lactobacillus sp
  • Isolation of biosurfactant producing microbes from culture dependent and culture independent approaches from different soil samples
  • Assessment of microbial diversity through metagenomic approaches
  • Bioprocess modeling and simulation of biosurfactant production through MATLAB approaches
  • Genome-scale metabolic modeling of biosurfactant producing microbes
